The Market Shift: Why Families Are Looking Beyond Short-Term Academic Support
Across markets such as Canada and Australia, families are becoming more intentional about the kind of academic support they choose for their children. The concern is no longer limited to whether a student can keep up with the next test or school year. More parents are looking for learning environments that help their children build confidence, think independently, and understand the logic behind what they are learning.
The pressure behind that shift is real. In Canada, PISA 2022 found that 22% of students did not reach the baseline level of mathematics proficiency, and Ontario’s latest EQAO results show that only 51% of Grade 6 students and 58% of Grade 9 students met the provincial standard in mathematics. In Australia, PISA 2022 showed that 74% of students reached at least baseline proficiency in mathematics, meaning around one in four were still below that benchmark, while ACARA’s 2025 NAPLAN results found that 9.2% of students were in numeracy’s “Needs additional support” category.
For many families, this is not only about marks. It is about whether their child is truly building numerical reasoning, conceptual understanding, and the confidence to apply what they know over time. That is where MathConcept sees opportunity: not in offering more worksheets, but in providing a more structured, logic-led approach that helps students rebuild foundations, deepen understanding, and keep growing with purpose.
The MathConcept Vision: Nurturing Thinkers, Not Just Test-Takers
MathConcept was founded by Alex on a clear belief: long-term growth in math requires more than drills, repetition, and memorised procedures. While repetitive practice may deliver a short-term score improvement, it often leaves students without the confidence or ability to apply math independently in the real world.
At the heart of Alex’s vision is the belief that understanding concepts and logic opens the door to more than strong academic results. It builds confidence, independence, and a deeper way of thinking. In a world shaped by digital tools, instant information, and constant change, math is no longer just a school subject. It is part of how students learn to interpret patterns, make decisions, and understand the world around them.
That is why we move beyond formula-led teaching and towards curiosity-driven, concept-first learning. By helping students understand why math works, not just what steps to follow, the program encourages a more meaningful and lasting relationship with learning.
Whether a student needs to rebuild confidence or is ready to explore math beyond their current grade level, the goal remains the same: to nurture thinkers, not just test-takers. For partners, that creates an opportunity to build a business rooted not only in academic progress, but in long-term cognitive impact and educational value.
A Proven Model of Continuous Growth
A strong education brand should be able to perform not only during stable periods, but also during times of uncertainty.
Since 2012, we have built a substantial academic foundation, serving more than 90,000 students, growing to over 50 centers, and developing more than 100,000 pages of courseware and educational publications. That depth reflects a system that has been built, tested, and refined over time.
Our growth through the 2020–2022 period is especially meaningful. While many sectors faced disruption and uncertainty, we continued to expand. For prospective partners, this reflects more than momentum. It points to a durable model supported by clear curriculum structure, strong parent trust, and continued demand for meaningful academic support.
Education remains one of the areas families continue to prioritise even in uncertain times. When parents recognise that a program is helping their child truly understand mathematical concepts, build the logic, confidence, and problem-solving foundation, they just continue to invest in that support.
The “Concept-First” Advantage: Evolving with the Student from K-12
Our model is designed to support students across a broad learning journey.
We work with learners from early years through secondary levels, allowing families to find a consistent academic partner across multiple stages of their child’s development. That continuity matters. It creates long-term trust and allows learning support to evolve alongside the student rather than serving only one end of the market.
This is one of our strongest advantages as a franchise model. It allows partners to build long-term relationships with families while offering continuity as students grow and their academic needs change.
- Bridging the Gaps: We help students find their footing by identifying and strengthening the specific areas where they may have lost confidence, helping them feel empowered in their daily schoolwork.
- Removing the Ceiling: For students ready to move faster than their current school year allows, we provide the space and resources to explore advanced logic and complex problem-solving without limits.
- Competitive Excellence: We celebrate student achievement through our annual MathConceptition, a global event that recently hosted a record-breaking 10,000+ participants. This platform allows students to measure their progress and connect with a community of thinkers from other cities and regions.
Strategic Expansion with Local Relevance
A strong franchise opportunity depends not only on brand story, but also on whether the model can be adapted and operated well in different markets.
Our expansion approach is built on that principle. We localise our courseware to align with local curriculum frameworks and everyday context, so students build not only mathematical understanding, but also the confidence to apply it in real life.
- Localized Curriculum Development:
We localise our courseware to align with local curriculum frameworks and everyday context, so students build not only mathematical understanding, but also the confidence to apply it in real life. - Operational Flexibility & The 1:6 Ratio:
We combine structure with flexibility. Our maximum 1:6 tutor-to-student ratio supports personalised learning and premium care, while allowing Directors to shape their center’s focus based on local demand and their professional strengths. - Strategic Site Selection:
To support sustainable growth, MathConcept provides guidance on strategic site selection and partner development. For those aligned with our mission, the opportunity offers more than business ownership alone. It offers long-term professional growth as MathConcept continues to expand internationally. - Professional Evolution:
For partners who demonstrate exceptional alignment with our mission, the partnership offers more than just business ownership; it provides an environment for long-term professional evolution as the brand establishes its presence across the Canadian landscape.
Leadership Built on the Operator’s Journey
One of our strongest advantages is the leadership behind our expansion.
As we grow internationally, our partners are supported by more than one individual. They are backed by the wider MathConcept system, which is shaped by years of experience, mature leadership, and a strong foundation built in Hong Kong.
To lead this next stage, we have appointed Stella Sou, our Macau and International Division CEO. Stella opened MathConcept’s first overseas region outside Hong Kong, starting with the first center in Macau and later scaling it to 10 co-owned centers and two distinct sub-brands. Working closely with our Hong Kong leadership and with full support from the wider group, she brings firsthand operator experience that helps partners navigate the realities of opening, growing, and scaling with confidence.
For franchise partners, that means receiving guidance not only from Stella’s direct experience, but also from the strength of a larger network and a mature system designed to support long-term quality and sustainable growth.
